Making equivalent fractions

Fractions Lab helps students to learn about multiplicative structures as they make equivalent fractions. Learn how the equivalent fractions tool creates equivalent fractions in this short guide.

1. Right click on any representation

This will bring up the actions menu

2. Select 'Find equivalent'

This will create a copy of your fraction with a number on the side that indicates the number of times it has been portioned.

3. Use the arrows to change the numerator and denominator

This forms an equivalent fraction in different ways according to which representation is used. Rectangles are partitioned in a perpendicular fashion. Number lines and jugs are partitioned between their scales. Sets are duplicated.

Have a go!

  • Try changing the original fraction and notice that whatever you do to the original will be replicated in the new equivalent fraction that has been made.
