The Task

Make a fraction in Fractions Lab. Right click it and select 'find equivalent'. Find an equivalent fraction by increasing the number of partitions by 2, 3, 4 and 5. What do you notice happens to the numerator and denominator?

This familiarisation task supports students to understand how to make equivalent fractions using Fractions Lab. It also encourages them to consider how equivalent fractions can be found using multiplicative reasoning.

Number lines, rectangles and jugs are partitioned. Sets demonstrate the multiplicative reasoning in a different way, by increasing the number of objects in the set.
